Before April 1973, many transatlantic travellers relied on group eligibility through clubs, companies, trade bodies, religious organizations, or similar entities, provided the group was not created merely to bypass laws to obtain cheap travel and was acceptable to the UK CAA and US CAB. Abuse led to the introduction of Advance Booking Charters allowing any individual to book, and later relaxations created other cheap transatlantic fare types; affinity charters now operate only genuinely and are no longer a major market segment.
