A bank is a financial institution that accepts deposits from customers and provides loans and other financial services. Banks play a central role in the economy by facilitating payments, safeguarding money, and supporting economic activity through lending. They serve individuals, businesses, governments, and other organizations. Modern banking is a cornerstone of the financial system. Economic growth depends heavily on banking services.

One of the primary functions of a bank is deposit-taking. Customers place funds in accounts for safekeeping and transaction purposes. Banks then use a portion of these deposits to provide loans to borrowers. This process helps channel savings into productive economic activities. Financial intermediation is therefore a key banking function.

Banks also provide a wide variety of additional services. These include money transfers, foreign-exchange transactions, investment services, wealth management, and payment processing. Over recent decades many banks have diversified into more complex financial activities. Some institutions engage in investment banking and trading operations. This expansion has increased both opportunities and risks.

The global financial crisis of 2007–2008 prompted debate about the separation of traditional retail banking from higher-risk investment banking. Critics argued that speculative activities exposed depositors and financial systems to unnecessary risk. As a result, regulatory reforms were introduced in many jurisdictions. Financial stability became a major policy concern. Risk management gained greater importance.

Banks remain essential institutions within modern economies. They facilitate commerce, support investment, and contribute to financial stability. Central banks, commercial banks, merchant banks, and other specialized institutions all play distinct roles within the banking system. Their activities influence economic growth and financial markets. The concept of banking continues to evolve in response to technological and regulatory change.
