Beta stocks were formerly a classification used by the London Stock Exchange to identify shares with the second-highest level of market liquidity. The system categorized securities according to how frequently they were traded. Beta stocks ranked below alpha stocks but above gamma and delta stocks. Liquidity was the primary consideration. The classification assisted market participants in assessing trading activity.


The London Stock Exchange used these categories to establish market-making obligations. Securities with higher liquidity required market makers to provide more consistent trading support. Beta stocks were actively traded, although not as frequently as alpha stocks. Investors generally found them easier to buy and sell. Market efficiency was enhanced through the system.


Liquidity is an important characteristic of financial securities. Highly liquid shares can be traded quickly without significantly affecting market prices. Beta stocks provided a balance between accessibility and trading volume. Investors often considered liquidity when constructing portfolios. Trading costs could also be influenced by liquidity levels.


The alpha-beta-gamma-delta classification system was eventually replaced by the Normal Market Size (NMS) framework. The newer system provided a more detailed approach to measuring market liquidity. As financial markets evolved, more sophisticated methods became necessary. Regulatory and technological developments contributed to these changes. The older classifications are now largely historical.


Although the term beta stocks is no longer widely used, it remains relevant in discussions of market history and exchange development. The classification reflects earlier approaches to managing liquidity and market-making responsibilities. Understanding such systems provides insight into the evolution of stock exchanges.
