Used in reference to a *chromosome where the *centromere is situated closer to one end than the other. Acrocentric chromosomes travel toward one pole during the *anaphase stage of cell division, giving rise to a 'J'-shaped chromosome as opposed to the typical 'V' shape of *metacentric chromosomes, which have the centromere in the center.
