High-energy phosphoric *ester, also known as a *nucleotide, of the nucleoside adenosine, which serves as the main energy-bearing molecule in all living things' cells. It releases a sizable quantity of free energy (34 kJ/mol at *pH 7) during its *hydrolysis to form ADP (*adenosine diphosphate) and inorganic phosphate, which powers several metabolic processes.
