Serial Advanced Technology Attachment The Serial ATA (SATA) connector facilitates the connection of hard drives, optical drives, and other storage devices for rapid data transfer. The SATA standard is generally employed for internal devices within a computer system, whereas external storage devices utilize the external SATA (eSATA) connector for similar functionality. Wired networks provide the benefit of exceptionally high-speed connections; nevertheless, they necessitate the installation of actual cables between machines. Consequently, we frequently depend on wireless networks to enhance convenience in our lives. Wi-Fi networks establish robust wireless local area networks (WLANs) that enable the utilization of smartphones, laptops, and other connected devices throughout our house or business. Wi-Fi networks are also referred to as 802.11x networks due to their foundation on the 802.11x standard.

You have likely utilized several additional wireless networking methods as well. Bluetooth networks are referred to as personal area networks (PANs). They are typically generated by a computer or smartphone and are intended to assist an individual. The primary function of Bluetooth networks is to establish wireless connections between a computer and its peripherals. Bluetooth enables the utilization of wireless headsets and facilitates the connection of mobile phones to vehicles for hands-free operation.
The range of a Bluetooth network is approximately 30 feet, or 10 meters, utilizing radio frequency (RF) communications. Near-field communication (NFC) technology facilitates exceptionally short-range wireless connections. For two devices to interact using NFC, they must be positioned within a few inches of each other. NFC technology is frequently employed for wireless transactions and access control systems.

Ensure that you are familiar with the applications and ranges of the different wireless networking alternatives and be ready to choose the most suitable one for a certain situation! Bluetooth and NFC networks are not general-purpose networks for connecting many computers; rather, they are highly effective for
short-range applications.

Wired network connections operate by linking an Ethernet cable from a computer to an Ethernet network jack in the wall, as illustrated below. Behind the wall plate, more cables extend to switches and other network devices that facilitate network operation. The Ethernet cables utilized for wired networks are equipped with plugs resembling the one depicted in below This is referred to as an RJ-45 connector, and it constitutes an industry standard. RJ stands for "registered jack," and the RJ-45 connector is the 45th standard in this series. The RJ-45 connector is occasionally described as an 8-pin connector. This is due to the presence of eight copper pins at the end. Upon severing an Ethernet cable, one would discover eight copper wires contained within. Each wire is connected to a corresponding pin on the connection. RJ-45 connectors are affixed to network cables via specialized tools known as crimpers. Figure below illustrates an example of a crimper. Technicians can verify the functionality of a cable via a specialized cable tester, exemplified in Figure below

​Small form-factor pluggable (SFP) modules, exemplified in Figure 9.5, facilitate the connection of fiber-optic cables to network equipment. These modules connect to a network switch or router to integrate it with the fiber-optic system of the network. They facilitate high-speed data transmissions and are crucial for network configurations that span extensive distances or necessitate rapid transfer rates beyond the capabilities of conventional copper cables.
