Computer Science - Peripheral Interfaces
Peripheral devices are supplementary components, such printers, scanners, keyboards, and mouse, that are connected to computer systems.
Currently, it is essential to understand that several types of connectors and cables are utilized to link peripheral devices to computer systems. As you prepare for the examination, you should be able to identify each of these connectors.
Universal Serial Bus
The first set of connectors is compatible with several types of devices. The predominant type among these is the Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector. USB connectors exist in three distinct variations: USB-A, USB-B, and USB-C. Each connector is available in several sizes, complicating matters.
It is essential to identify them to choose a suitable cable for any given circumstance.
The Lightning connector is a proprietary interface developed by Apple for mobile devices. It use the connector depicted below to connect and charge Apple mobile devices. The Lightning connector is being deprecated in favor of the standard USB-C.
Serial Advanced Technology Attachment The Serial ATA (SATA) connector facilitates the connection of hard drives, optical drives, and other storage devices for rapid data transfer. The SATA standard is generally employed for internal devices within a computer system, whereas external storage devices utilize the external SATA (eSATA) connector for similar functionality. Figure below illustrates the SATA and eSATA connectors.
