Optical drives utilize lasers to inscribe data onto a detachable disc that may be stored independently from the computer system. These optical discs, exemplified in Figure 7.5, exist in numerous formats: Compact discs (CDs) were the initial optical storage medium, capable of storing up to 680 MB of data on a single disk. Digital video discs (DVDs) enhance storage density, permitting the accommodation of up to 17 GB of data on a single disk. Blu-ray discs (BDs) provide the greatest capacity among optical formats, enabling the storing of up to 128 GB of data on a single disk.


​Various categories exist for each type of optical media. Read-only CDs are manufactured with pre-recorded data that cannot be altered by users. Recordable discs enable users to inscribe data into them; however, this material is permanently retained and cannot be wiped or altered. Rewritable disks are erasable and can be reused following data recording. Optical drives rapidly rotate discs while employing a laser to read and write data. Consequently, optical drives, like to HDDs, exemplify spinning disk media.
