KembaraXtra–Computer Terms – 10Base-F
10Base-F is an Ethernet standard designed for fiber-optic networking and provides a 10 megabit-per-second data rate within a star-shaped network layout. Every computer or device connects to a central hub, repeater, or concentrator through fiber-optic lines. Each station uses a dedicated fiber-optic transceiver, typically paired with connectors such as ST or SMA, which plug into the system’s network interface through an AUI connection. The 10Base-F family includes three specialized branches: 10Base-FB for backbone links requiring efficient synchronization over long distances, 10Base-FL for direct workstation-to-hub connections, and 10Base-FP for passive star setups that do not require powered repeaters. This set of standards brought the advantages of fiber, including electrical isolation and improved resistance to interference, into early LAN architecture.
