10Base2 is an early Ethernet networking method that operates at 10 megabits per second and uses thin coaxial cabling roughly three-sixteenths of an inch thick. This cable type supports network segments up to about 200 meters long and is arranged in a bus topology in which every machine shares the same cable line. Devices connect through a BNC connector attached to the network adapter. Because it used inexpensive cable and was easy to deploy in small offices, it became known by several alternate names, including Cheapernet, Thin Ethernet, ThinNet, and ThinWire. It represented an accessible, low-cost solution for organizations building their first LAN environments.
