10Base5 is one of the earliest Ethernet standards, providing 10 megabits per second of baseband communication over thick coaxial cable about three-eighths of an inch in diameter. This cable can stretch up to 500 meters per segment, making it useful for connecting larger areas or forming network backbones. Computers connect through an external transceiver, which attaches to a 15-pin AUI port on the network card and physically taps into the cable. Because of the cable’s rigidity and durability, this form of Ethernet came to be known as Thick Ethernet, ThickNet, or ThickWire. Though more difficult to install than its thin-cable counterpart, it delivered stronger signal integrity for long-distance network runs.
