The term 14.4 refers to a modem capable of transmitting data at up to 14.4 kilobits per second. This speed represented an important leap forward during the early days of dial-up communications, enabling faster access to bulletin board systems, early online services, and e-mail exchanges. Although modest by modern standards, 14.4 Kbps modems were once considered powerful tools for remote communication.
