An attachment is a file that is sent together with an e-mail message. The attached file is an exact copy of the original file stored on the sender’s computer and can include many different types of files such as documents, executable programs, images, or compressed archives containing multiple files. Although it accompanies the e-mail message, the attachment itself is not part of the actual message text. To allow the file to be transmitted through e-mail systems, it is typically encoded using formats such as uuencoding, MIME, or BinHex. Most modern e-mail applications automatically encode files before sending them and decode them when they are received. The recipient must use an e-mail program capable of decoding the file or a separate decoding utility in order to open and read it. Some e-mail systems or gateways may restrict attachments based on file size, but most allow multiple files to be attached to a single e-mail message.
