Attenuation refers to the gradual weakening or reduction in strength of a signal as it travels through a transmission medium. This weakening can occur with different types of signals, including digital data signals and electrical signals, and may result in distortion or reduced amplitude by the time the signal reaches its destination. Attenuation commonly occurs in communication systems such as telephone lines, network cables, and wireless transmissions, where signal strength naturally decreases with distance from the source. It is usually measured in decibels (dB). In some situations attenuation is undesirable because it can reduce signal quality and cause errors in data transmission. However, it can also be intentionally applied in electronic systems—for example, using a volume control on a radio to reduce signal strength and prevent overloading or distortion.
