Automatic Private IP Addressing is a networking feature used in Windows XP TCP/IP that enables a computer to automatically assign itself an IP address when a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol server is not available. When the system is configured for dynamic addressing but cannot obtain an address from a DHCP server, it selects a unique address from a reserved range between 169.254.0.1 and 169.254.255.254. The system also automatically applies a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. This feature allows computers on the same local network to continue communicating with each other even when a central configuration service is unavailable. The feature is commonly referred to by the acronym APIPA.
