An autonomous system is a collection of interconnected routers or networks that are managed by a single administrative authority and use a common Interior Gateway Protocol to route data packets within the network. Each autonomous system functions as an independent routing domain within the larger Internet infrastructure. To ensure proper identification and coordination with other networks, every autonomous system is assigned a unique number known as an autonomous-system number. This number allows routing information to be exchanged efficiently between different autonomous systems across the Internet.
