Back Orifice is a malicious software tool created to allow unauthorized remote control of a computer system. It operates using two main components: a client application used by the attacker and a server application installed on the target computer. Once the server component is installed—often through a deceptive executable file delivered via e-mail attachment or removable storage—the attacker can use the client program to control the infected system. The program typically installs itself in the system directory of the Windows operating system and allows remote commands to be executed on the compromised computer. First appearing in 1998, Back Orifice quickly became known as a security threat and prompted improvements in antivirus and security software. The name is a play on the Microsoft BackOffice server product suite.
