A backbone refers to the main communication pathway in a network that carries the majority of data traffic between smaller or local networks. In large-scale networks such as the Internet, backbone networks consist of high-capacity transmission systems operated by major communication providers and can span very large geographic distances using technologies such as fiber-optic lines, dedicated communication links, and microwave relays. Historically, backbone networks also included the academic and research networks that formed the early structure of the Internet, including networks developed by universities and research institutions. Within a local area network, the backbone may also refer to the primary cable or communication line that connects multiple segments of the network and carries most of the internal network traffic.
