In graphical user interfaces and display environments, background refers to the visual surface against which characters, graphics, and interface elements are displayed. This may include the color behind text and images, such as black characters displayed on a white background. In desktop environments, the background often refers to the surface of the desktop itself, including the colors, textures, patterns, or pictures that appear behind icons, menus, and toolbars. Similarly, on a web page, the background refers to the visual surface behind text, graphics, and interactive elements. In window-based operating systems, background can also describe an open but currently inactive window that is not the main focus of user interaction.
