A black box refers to a hardware or software component whose internal workings are not visible or necessary for the user to understand. Although the internal structure remains hidden, the function of the component is clearly defined and documented.
Designers and engineers often use black boxes as functional units within larger systems. For example, a memory chip can be treated as a black box because users only need to know how it stores and retrieves data, not the detailed internal processes that make it work.
