A blackout is a situation in which electrical power drops completely to zero, resulting in a total loss of electricity. Such events can occur due to natural disasters like storms or earthquakes, or because of technical failures in power infrastructure such as damaged transformers or broken power lines.
For computers, a blackout can be harmful depending on what the system was doing when the power was lost. Any unsaved data will be lost immediately, and if the blackout happens while a disk is reading or writing data, files may become corrupted or even lost entirely. In some cases, hardware damage can also occur. To protect systems from these risks, a battery-backed uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is often used.
