Infectious Diseases and Microbiology - Acute Gastroenteritis ( Astrovirus)
Acute gastroenteritis is most commonly caused by astronavirus in newborns and young children. The fecal-oral pathway is the mode of transmission for astraviruses. The causative agent of diarrhea in children is astrovirus, which is second only in frequency to rotavirus. Acute gastroenteritis caused by an astron virus typically resolves on its own and manifests with symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, fever, and watery diarrhea. Infection with an astronavirus is typically milder than that with rotavirus. Enterocytes are directly damaged when an astrocytic virus infects cells lining the intestines. There is a correlation between serum IgG antibody and viral clearance and protective immunity. Genomic DNA and viral antigen tests can identify astroviruses. Astrovirus infection does not have a vaccination or therapy.
