Infectious Diseases and Microbiology - Disease from bird ( Chlamydophila psittaci)

Chlamydophila psittaci formerly belonged to the genus Chlamydia.
Similar to a gram-negative cell wall but without the usual peptidoglycan.
Obligate intracellular parasite inside cells. The reticulate body is the intracellular metabolically active form, whereas the elementary body is the extracellular infectious form.

Birds serve as a reservoir for infections, which are spread through handling diseased tissues or inhaling dried bird droppings. Workers at pet stores, veterinary clinics, poultry farms, and handling birds are among the high-risk groups of people.

The symptoms of a disease might range from minor to severe. Fever, headache, chills, malaise, myalgia, and bilateral interstitial pneumonia are examples of mild symptoms. Hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, endocarditis, mycocarditis, gastrointestinal problems, and encephalitis are examples of severe presentations. Severe symptoms may pose a threat to life.

Spread to the reticuloendothelial system and localized necrosis after entrance into the respiratory tract cause systemic organ involvement.
A diagnosis is made via serology.Macrolides like erythromycin and tetracyclines can cause C psittaci to become sensitive.
