gram-positive bacteria; gamma hemolytic; catalase positive; coagulase negative; and resistant to novobiocin. The lower urinary tract normally contains S saprophyticus. The most common reason why sexually active women get UTIs. On blood agar plates, S. saprophyticus does not produce hemolysis. Being catalase positive, it is similar to other staphylococci. It differs from other coagulase-negative staphylococci due to its resistance to novobiocin.In most cases, the best antibiotics for UTI prevention are norfloxacin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
