Pathology - Migraine Headache
Pathophysiology Although the exact cause of migraines is unknown, the body of research now available points to vasospasm and the production of chemical cytokines as the source of pain. Migraines are more common in women and can linger for hours or even days. Usually one-sided, the headache may have an aura before it starts. Additional characteristics include a sensitivity to sound (phonophobia) and light (photophobia). Prophylactic drugs like ergots and abortive medications like triptans make up standard treatment. Injections of botulinum toxin are among the most recent treatments for migraines that don't respond to conventional therapies. It is noteworthy that migraineurs may experience physical debilitation and that their functionality may be affected.
