​Pharmacology - Bisacodyl 
The action laxative known as bisacodyl.

Method of Operation 
Peristalsis is stimulated by the active metabolite of bisacodyl, which does so via causing irritation to the mucosa and/or having an effect on the enteric nervous system. The promotion of net fluid secretion also contributes to an increase in fluid volume.

Rectal or oral administration is possible.16 hours is the half life. In the colon, bacteria are responsible for activating senna.

Use in Clinical Settings 
Chronic constipation is a common condition. Prior to surgery or examination, bowel cleansing is performed. When administered rectally, bisacodyl has a more fast action than when taken orally, which takes six hours.

Adverse Effects
Abdominal cramps. A tolerance to activity that can cause atony of the colon if it is used in excessive amounts.
