Pharmacology - Edrophonium
The actions of edrophonium The neuromuscular junction is characterized by fasciculation and an increase in twitch resistance. The manifestations of parasympathomimetic include bradycardia, increased secretions, increased peristalsis, and bronchoconstriction. Mode of Action Acetylcholinesterase can be inhibited in a reversible manner, which results in a reduction in the breakdown of acetylcholine at cholinergic nerve terminals, hence increasing neurotransmission. It is just the anionic site in the esterase that edrophonium is able to connect to. Most of the binding is electrostatic, and it may be reversed with relative ease. Distribution /Absorption /Elimination It can be administered intramuscularly or intravenously. The duration of the action is only ten minutes. Use in clinical settings Myasthenia gravis is detected and diagnosed. With the purpose of ensuring that the appropriate dosage of neostigmine or pyridostigmine is being administered for the treatment of myasthenia gravis. This action is not long enough for therapeutic usage. Adverse Effects May make asthma symptoms worse. Atropine has the ability to lessen the effects of unwanted parasympathomimetic activities.
