Pharmacology - Gentamicin
The action of gentamicin is to prevent bacteria from making new proteins. Action Process Produces faulty proteins as a result of incorrect codon:anticodon recognition, which in turn leads to mRNA misreading. Administered intramuscularly or slowly through intravenous injection or tubing. Orally or intravenously administered. The process of excretion by the kidneys. Keep an eye on the serum levels. Clinical Application The use of -lactam antibiotics to treat infections caused by staphylococci, streptococci, enterococci, and Gram-negative bacilli (including P. aeruginosa). Appropriate for the treatment of pneumonia, septicaemia, meningitis, endocarditis, and pyelonephritis. Potential Side Effects ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity depend on the dosage. GI side effects, rash, and blood problems are possible; loop diuretics can enhance ototoxicity, and neuromuscular blockers can have an even greater impact.
