Pharmacology - Mannitol
The amount of water that is excreted by the kidneys is increased, but the amount of sodium that is excreted is somewhat reduced. Method of Operation Due to the fact that it is an inert substance, it is not resorbed after it has been transported to the glomerulus and then into the serum. Acts in the regions of the nephron that are open to water and can absorb it without restriction. It is administered intravenously, it is not metabolized, and it is eliminated in around thirty minutes. Use in Clinical Settings Increased intraocular pressure and cerebral edema are both symptoms. Adverse Effects A temporary increase in the volume of extracellular fluid and a decrease in blood sodium levels as a result of osmotic removal of water from the intracellular space. Oedema of the lungs is a possibility.
