Pharmacology - Mefloquine
How Mefloquine Works An effective medication against malaria parasites in RBCs, known as a schizonticidal medicine. Action Process Theoretically, it protects the parasite from haem by blocking the enzyme that ordinarily breaks it down. The parasite is killed when the poisonous haem molecules build up. Poisoning causes a gradual beginning of action and a half-life of sixteen hours. Application in Clinical Practice In regions where falciparum malaria has developed resistance to chloroquine, it is used for chemoprophylaxis.Due to drug resistance, it is no longer used to treat falciparum malaria. Additionally, less toxic medicines are now available to treat benign malarias. Potential Side Effects gastrointestinal (GI) issues, neurological symptoms (such as ataxia, disorientation, hallucinations, and convulsions), cardiovascular system abnormalities, rash, fever, and leucopenia.
