Pharmacology - Metronidazole
Metronidazole kills Entamoeba histolytica in its motile forms. Effect Mechanism As a result of the drug's metabolism, the trophozoite produces free radicals, which cause DNA damage. It has a half-life of 7 hours when taken orally, intravenously, or intrarectally. The half-life of tinidazole is greater. Application in Clinical Practice For the treatment of amoebic dystery, which should be followed with diloxanide, and amoebic liver abscesses. Used for giardiasis and trichomoniasis as well. Ill Consequences GIT disturbances; anorexia. Ataxia, myalgia, hepatitis, and blood dyscrasias are rare side effects. The consumption of alcohol can lead to disulram responses.
