Activity of Oxytocin It causes the uterus to contract, which results in coordinated contractions that go from the fundus to the cervix, with complete relaxation occurring in between each contraction. Use in Clinical Settings This is done in situations where the uterine muscle is not functioning properly, in order to induce or enhance labor. When uterine atony is the cause of postpartum hemorrhage, either to prevent or treat it. A treatment for hemorrhage that is caused by an incomplete abortion. Adverse Effects the vasodilatation that is caused by the dose-related hypotension. Because it has an effect similar to that of an antidiuretic hormone, it might cause water retention.Oxytocin causes the myoepithelial cells in the postpartum mammary gland to constrict, which results in a gradual decrease in milk production.
