Pharmacology - Phenelzine
Phenelzine is an antidepressant

Method of Operation
Both phenelzine and isocarboxacid have the ability to block monoamine oxidase in an irreversible manner, both in its A and B forms. Specifically, MAO-A acts predominantly on noradrenaline and 5-HT, whereas MAO-B primarily acts on dopamine. MAO is located in nerve terminals. When MAO is inhibited, the amount of transmitter that is present in the nerveending is increased.
The suppression of MAO-A is responsible for the antidepressant effect. Among the MAO-A inhibitors, moclobemide is a selective and reversible inhibitor. In the treatment of Parkinson's disease, MAO-B inhibitors are utilized.

Ingestion of the medication. The plasma half-life is between one and two hours, although the activity lasts significantly longer due to the irreversible inhibition of MAO. The moclobemide 1–2 hours is the half life.

Use in Clinical Settings
Depression, with a potential focus on atypical depression due to its potential utility. Fear of other people. It may take a few days for the clinical effect to manifest.

Allergies and Reactions
Postural hypotension is caused by. Headache is a concern. A lack of sleep. Sexual dysfunction is a problem. Retention of urine and dry mouth respectively.
An overdose can cause convulsions. There is a higher likelihood of suicide among younger patients. The hypertensive crisis that occurs when cheese is combined with dietary tyramine. Due to the fact that MAO-B is still operational, the cheese reaction takes place with moclobemide with reduced intensity.

MAOIs are considered a second-line treatment for depression since they are associated with a higher incidence of adverse effects compared to TCAs and SSRIs.
